7 qts. water
1 smoked ham bone
1 cup chopped carrots
1/2 cup diced green bellpepper
1 cup diced celery
1 cup chopped green beans
2 cups diced onions
2 cloves chopped garlic
2 Tbsp. butter
1/2 tsp dried thyme
1 chopped sun dried tomato
3/4 tsp ground black pepper
1 bay leaf
sea salt to taste
 
 

Cooking Directions:

  1. Sort through and thoroughly wash beans.
  2. In a large pot (6-8 qt. capacity) place water, ham bone and spices in to pot and simmer for 10 minutes.  Add split peas, cover and bring soup to a boil.  Lower heat to medium low and cook 20 minutes.
  3. Place vegetables, garlic, tomatoes and butter in a covered microwave sish and heat on igh for 4 minutes.  Add to soup, cover and simmr for 20 more minutes.
  4. Remove the ham bone to cool.  Discard bones and fat.  Dice fina dn stir back into soup.  Discard bay leaf before serving.
  5. Salt and pepper to taste.
