When ordering this chili soup I knew how good Grey Wolf Mountain chicken noodle soup tastes, so I assumed their chili would be just as good. Silly me! They package clearly stated this was "chili soup". They were right! When prepared to directions it was thin, watery and tasteless. Maybe I have a bizarre conception of chili but I prefer it gravy thick with lots and lots of beans, meat and vegetables with enough spices so you know that it is chili. The Grey Wolf Mountain Chili Soup did not meet these criteria so I started playing around to see if I could improve it. I did! It can be an excellent chili!! Here is what I did: added 7cups water, 1-14oz. can diced tomatoes, 6oz. tomato paste, 1 lb. browned and seasoned ground beef, 1/4cup diced pickled jalapeños, 3cloves garlic, 2tsp. cumin, 1-1/2Tbsp. chili powder, 3/4cup matzo flour, 1/2cup shredded Monterrey Jack cheese and 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese. This mixture was simmered about an hour, cooled and stored in the refrigerator overnight (so the flavors could mix and get to know each other.) The next day I reheated the chili very, very slowly to prevent scorching. Yummm! Great taste, great texture, great consistency. Ultimately it needs some additional red/black beans and more onion. Was all this effort worth it? Ultimately yes. I did not waste food or money (idea of not wasting food pounded into head by mother when I was small) but it would almost be simpler to make chili from scratch; a task I was trying to avoid by purchasing the chili mix. By using the above changes/additions you will have a great chili. Otherwise in my opinion there are other better brands I would recommend first.
